The managing director of an award-winning digital PR agency has given industry insight and career advice to students at the University of Chester.

Outwrite’s Anthony Bullick spoke to first year marketing students on the developments and challenges businesses face when implementing PR and communications, as well as the opportunities for working in the industry.

He illustrated how a modern-day PR practitioner has to move beyond delivering a tactic and embed their skillset within the strategic and decision-making elements of the business.

The chartered PR practitioner also discussed that when it does come to tactics, successful PR and communications professionals expand their campaign past just media relations included additional tools such as social media, SEO, and podcasts.

And the talk was followed by a Q&A session on careers in the PR industry, which Anthony says is something he valued when at university himself.

“When I was a student, some of the most valuable lessons we had were on jobs and how to land the role that you covet the most,” he said.

“And from the conversations I had with the students afterwards, it was clear there was a lot of interest in that topic as they eye life after their studies.

“It’s also a fantastic opportunity to showcase how integrated PR is fascinating and rewarding, with creative campaigns allowing for variety of work.

The presentation was Anthony’s third at the University of Chester and latest to an academic audience, following his guest lectures at Bangor University and Manchester Metropolitan University.

The agency’s clients include Bromborough-based LBW Chartered Accountants, UK-wide engineering, environmental, and planning consultancy Caulmert, Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK, and foodservice buying group Fairway Foodservice.

The agency specialises in integrated PR and SEO (search engine optimisation), crisis PR, and social media training.
