As a second-year media and communications student at Swansea University, I was fortunate enough to participate in a two-week internship at Outwrite PR.

During my time at the agency, I practised and built upon several core skills including press release writing.

Having been taught the foundational principles during my studies, Outwrite enabled me to refine my understanding of what makes a good press release including consistency, coherency, and a clear focal point.

Furthermore, I was tasked to write stories containing several significant events, which allowed me to learn how to determine the most important pieces of information and compose them in a concise manner.

Such an ability is imperative for any public relations practitioner as they must ensure their work sufficiently informs the audience whilst retaining their attention.

Additionally, feedback on my work encouraged me to assume the stance of a reader when writing to minimise the risk of misinterpretation.

On account of this, I considered my words more carefully when editing and reflected upon the potential implications certain vocabulary and grammar may hold – something I would not have previously done.

Moreover, working at Outwrite increased my awareness of how best to market myself in a professional manner.

Advice included keeping an updated profile on networking sites such as LinkedIn to connect with employers and attending industry specific events held by accrediting bodies such as the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) or the Public Relations and Communications Association (PRCA).

Additionally, volunteer PR work within the local community or by virtual means were suggested to further expand my skillset and portfolio.

Overall, this opportunity has proved invaluable to distinguish myself as a prospective practitioner with a passion for PR as I better understand how to complete key tasks, what employers are looking for in candidates, and what to expect when working within the industry.
