Candis magazine funds dining hall face-lift at Southcoates Primary School
Colourful signs and posters encouraging children to eat healthily have been bought to decorate the dining hall of a Hull primary school, thanks to a grant from Candis magazine.
A dinner lady at Southcoates Primary School, Southcoates Lane, applied for the money after seeing the efforts being made by kitchen staff and teachers to ban chocolate and sweets and promote healthy food.
Tracy Towle, 35, from Egton Street, received £778 from women’t magazine Candis, which gives ten per cent of its sales income to community initiatives and health charities across the UK.
Tracy, whose ten year old son, Callan, goes to Southcoates Primary School, said: “Ever since Jamie Oliver did away with turkey twizzlers, school dinners and attitudes towards children’s eating habits have changed dramatically.
“At a parents’ meeting we struck upon the idea of buying some professionally made, bright and colourful signs and posters to reinforce our healthy eating message and lessons the children learn in science classes.
“Without the help of Candis magazine we couldn’t have afforded to buy them.”
Candis is one of Britain’s top ten selling monthly titles. Since it was launched in 1962, more than £52 million has been raised for health charities, including Marie Curie Cancer Care, Children’s Hospices, Bliss – the special care baby charity and Tommy’s, the baby charity.
Candis editor, Debbie Attewell, said: “Candis is only too happy to support parents and staff, like Tracy, who are passionate about adopting an innovative and creative approach to healthy food and drinks.
