Marine lake re-opens thanks to hard work from North Wales contractor
A well-known Wirral landmark has officially re-opened after more than £1m of repair works by North Wales-based Jones Bros.
The civil engineering company stepped in to complete the project at the Marine Lake, West Kirby, after the original contractor abandoned the site due to financial difficulties.
Jones Bros (Civil Engineering), from Ruthin, who had been second placed contractor in the original tendering process, were called in at short notice to complete the partially-finished renovations.
The family-owned firm managed to make up lost time to complete the work to schedule, ready for the start of the school holidays, and within budget.
The 54-acre marine lake is owned by Wirral Borough Council and is a popular sailing and recreational venue, boasting five jetties, a visitor walkway and stunning views of the Welsh Hills and the Dee Estuary.
Jones Bros Contracts Manager, Hefin Lloyd-Davies, said: “We were delighted to be able to step in quickly and quietly and get the work completed for Wirral Borough Council with minimal disruption.
The repair work involved raising the level of the lake by 100 millimetres, improving and resurfacing the lakeside visitor walkway, combating embankment erosion, installing new penstock valves from the Dee estuary and increasing the rock armour along the Foreshore.
The project is one of a number of marine engineering contracts undertaken by Jones Bros, which in North Wales have included Deganwy Marina.
Founded more than 40 years ago, the business employs more than 240 in infrastructure development, waste management and highways construction.
